When it’s rabbit’s turn, he forgets to prepare a dish, but tells the proud predator that a more powerful mountain lion stole it from him. The beast follows him to a well, where he argues with his reflection then pounces into the water. The mountain lion deserved this fate because he bullied the other animals into serving him. The book can be used to discuss the importance of respecting others and how good qualities (self-confidence) can become flaws in excess (pride).
Three Billy Goats Gruff – A mean troll threatens to eat the goats that cross the bridge he lives beneath. Each one tricks him by suggesting that he eats the larger goat who will be crossing later on. Finally, the last goat meets the troll, who is too intimidated by his size to eat him. This funny tale shows children that bullies are often cowards, who don’t deserve to be taken seriously.
The Ant and the Big Bad Bully Goat – One day, when Badger leaves his burrow to do some gardening, a large, nasty goat moves in and locks the door. All of Badger’s fierce neighbours are too scared of the goat to help. An ant offers to face the goat, & tricks him into getting close enough to sting him on the nose, causing him to run out of the house. The book shows that you don’t need to be big or strong in order to stand up to bullies.
Beyond the Fence – Piggy lives in a big house with Thomas, who belittles and controls him. Explore equality and respect in relationships by comparing the way that Thomas and Wild Pig each treat Piggy. Pay attention to Piggy’s body language and how he speaks when he’s with each of the characters. Thomas knocks over the forest that Piggy makes out of blocks; how would you feel if you were Piggy?
